“Brad, you can trust me,” he said, touching my leg, causing me to smile weakly.

“What would you like to know?” I asked, hoping he didn’t ask any questions about my “child’s father.” But, I tried to mentally prepare myself for a story because I knew it would come up.

“I feel like I know you, but not really. I know you have a kind heart; I can tell that much by the little things you do around here,” he said, biting his apple again. “I want to know more about you, like, what’s your full name, birthday; shit, you can even throw your social in there. I barely know you. I need some leverage to assure me I can trust I won’t wake up one day to realize you finessed me,” he joked.

“Bradleigh Briana Lambert is my full name, and I’ll be eighteen on October third.”

“And your social security number?” he grinned before taking another bite of his apple.

Smiling back, I continued. “I grew up in the church, that's my father,” I said, pointing at the television. Sadness washed over me. This was my normal routine, watching my father’s sermon on TV. As much as I cried about wanting out of the church, I realized it was where I belonged. I missed it. It wasn’t that I couldn’t go, I was just ashamed.

Turning around to look at what I was pointing at, I watched Zay’s reaction.

“That’s my mother,” I spoke as the camera panned around the congregation before landing on my mother.

“Tell me about your family.”

“As you can see, my family is big in the church; my father is the minister at Greater Christian Baptist. My mother stands by his side as the loving, devoted, God fearing woman. My parents have been happily married for almost twenty-two years. I have a twenty-one-year-old sister, who is the closest thing that I have to a best friend named Shani.” I smiled, thinking about my sister. I missed her like crazy, and every day, I wanted to pick up the phone and call her, but I didn’t. I was kind of mad she hadn’t fought harder, but then again, I understood; there was no point in us both being homeless. Although she lived on her own, she depended on my parents just as much as I did.

“I heard you throwing around words like loving, happily, and best friend; if that’s the case, how did you end up almost sleeping in a park?”

“This is how I ended up homeless,” I said, pointing at my baby bump.

“Almost homeless,” he smiled, rubbing my belly. I smiled back at him, feeling a tug at my heart. Not wanting to cross that line, I got my little feelings together.

“I’m seventeen, the daughter of a rising minister, and I’m pregnant out of wedlock. I hid it as long as I could, but the night you found me in the park was the day my luck ran out. I could see the hurt and embarrassment written all over my parents’ faces. My parents wanted nothing to do with me, which was expected.
